The World's 100 Most Powerful Women: DILMA 3ª

Dilma Rousseff made news when she was elected to lead Latin America's largest economy in October, but in many ways the election result was not a surprise. As the first female Chief of Staff under reformist President Lula da Silva, appointed in 2005, she was widely expected to be his successor. It is her rise to that post that is remarkable. Involved in Latin America's radical labor politics, Rousseff was jailed for two years. In 2001, when she was appointed Minister of Energy, Rousseff began to alter her views towards a more a pragmatic and capitalist approach. Today she is battling a rebellious National Congress threatening to halt her agenda and Brazil's economic boom. Outside politics, Rousseff is an avid theater fan, particularly classical Greek drama and opera.

Forbes - Eike Batista 2011

Brazil's richest man is gearing up to take over the world. Making a play for foreign investors, Batista announced this year the opening of an office in New York and his intention to list some of his companies on the London Stock Exchange. Through his holding company, EBX, Batista controls businesses spanning mining, shipbuilding, energy, logistics, tourism and entertainment. After months of discussions, he was triumphant in February in taking control of Canadian gold outfit Ventana. Two-thirds of his fortune comes from OGX, the oil-and-gas exploration company he founded in 2007 and took public a year later. He says the company will start producing oil this year. In rare recent setback, his planned IPO for his shipbuilding business (OSX), meant to be the world's largest IPO in 2010, was a disappointment and has had a lukewarm reception in the Brazilian market. The son of Brazil's revered former mining minister who presided over mining giant Companhia Vale do Rio Doce got his start in gold trading and mining. Onetime champion offshore powerboat racer; formerly married to Playboy cover girl. In media interviews he's been warning Carlos Helú Slim that he'll soon take his spot as the world's richest man, but he still has a ways to go.

Lula's handpicked successor is taking on the reigns as Brazil's first female president. Her victory wasn't the slam dunk originally expected on the first round at the polls, but on October 31 she beat her opponent with 56% of the votes. As Brazil's newly elected president Rousseff will run Latin America's largest economy and world's pantry: top exporter of sugar, orange juice, coffee, beef, poultry. Up to task: Former Marxist guerrilla was once jailed and tortured, twice divorced and recently survived lymphatic cancer.
